The following Windsor-Essex County organizations offer presentations, assessments, support, or referrals related to the Infection Protection initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness about the many infections that can cause disease. Included are resources available to support and encourage actions that will help reduce the spread of germs and keep our immune system strong in our homes, workplaces and in the community at large.

 

 

Windsor-Essex County Health Unit

The Health Unit provides a wide variety of resources on infection protection topics, such as:

 

  • Food safety 
  • Travel safety 
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Rabies
  • Avian influenza
  • Handwashing and hand sanitizing
  • Beach, spa and pool sampling
  • Immunizations for school-aged children

 

The following is a sampling of the kinds of services, clinics, and educational sessions that the Health Unit provides on these infection protection topics: 

 

  • Food Safety Certification courses
  • Animal bite investigations
  • Sexual health clinics
  • Community flu vaccination clinics
  • Safe water classes for pool operators
  • Water testing
  • Contact tracing for specific infectious diseases
  • Vaccinations recommended for travel

  • Health inspections of various community venders

  • Immunizations for school-aged children         

 

 

AIDS Committee of Windsor

The AIDS Committee of Windsor provides support and educational services for people at risk of, living with, or affected by HIV/AIDS in Essex and Kent counties. They offer a variety of resources and services that support the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, including safer sex guidelines, community health promotion and education, advocacy, information line, needle exchange program, methadone maintenance and case management, Hepatitis C treatment, and referral services for HIV testing. They also provide resources on other sexually transmitted infections. A speaker’s bureau is available to provide presentations on topics related to HIV/AIDS.

 

 

Teen Health Centre

The Teen Health Centre (THC) is dedicated to helping Essex County’s young people aged 12-24 years achieve physical and emotional health and well-being through education, counselling, and support. As part of their mandate, the THC currently provides a Hepatitis C program to improve the quality of life of people who have this disease and to increase education, prevention, and understanding of Hepatitis C in our community.

 

 

Windsor/Essex County Humane Society

The Windsor/Essex Humane Society offers a range of services, including animal control services, for the City of Windsor and preparing and coordinating adoption of pet dogs and cats. Rabies quarantine services are provided for animal bite investigations. Vaccinations are available for all dog and cat adoptions, including rabies. The agency also receives hundreds of calls each week reporting animal problems such as strays running loose, injuries, cruelty, and abuse. Many calls are from owners requesting pet care advice. If an inquiry or question cannot be answered or addressed, callers are referred to the proper place for assistance.

 

Windsor Occupational Health Information Service

The Windsor Occupational Health Information Service (WOHIS) is a community-based occupational health library, inquiry, video and referral service open to the entire community of Windsor-Essex County. They can offer workplaces educational videos developed to promote handwashing along with several paper resources on how to develop a pandemic plan for their organization.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency offers many web-based and print resources on a variety of food safety topics, such as food allergy alerts and food recalls, biotechnology and our food supply, food borne illness, and restaurant and food service inspections. They also provide a Food Health Hazard Complaint phone line for reporting a potential food safety incident if an individual believes a product presents a health and safety risk.
