Introduction

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the main cause of skin cancer, the most common type of cancer. One in 3 cancers in Ontario is a skin cancer (Cancer Care Ontario, 2009) and 18 deaths a week occur due to melanoma, one of the most deadly forms of skin cancer (Canadian Cancer Society, 2009). Shade can reduce the amount of UVR you receive by 75% or more (Australian Government, Department of Health and Aging, 2009).
