Sexually Transmitted Infections: Know Your Risks

You get sexually transmitted infections (STI) by having sex* or sexual contact** with someone who has an STI. It is difficult in many cases to determine if you or your partner has an STI. Some people have few or no symptoms at all. The most common symptoms are:

  • White, green or yellow discharge from the penis, vagina or rectum
  • Burning with urination
  • Painful or painless genital sores
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • For women - bleeding between periods or lower pelvic pain
    Teens
    Know your risks
You have a chance of getting an STI if:
  • You have unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex
  • You or your partner have more than one sexual partner
  • You share needles or equipment for drugs, body piercing, tattoos, or sex toys
  • You have sex under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • You and your partner have not talked about the above risk factors before having sex

    Be responsible
The only way to prevent a STI is to make choices that avoid risky behaviour.
  • Choose abstinence or consider doing other things like kissing, caressing and touching instead of sex
  • Use a condom every time you have sex
  • Limit the number of sexual partners you have
  • Get tested - even if you have no symptoms at all

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has three locations that provide information, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

To book an appointment at a location near you call:

  • Leamington location - 326-5716 ext. 2100
  • Long distance calls: 1-800-265-5822 ext. 1200 or 1201
