Local Girl Turns Off the Screen
Introduction
It all began on Monday, May 7th. My teacher had challenged us to a week of no screens, [TV, computer, video games], no junk food and only physical activities. That is how it all began. How many days did the challenge last for? Well the answer is 7 days!!! We were each given a sheet of paper, that we had to fill out every day and when we had filled out the sheet our parents had to sign it. Then our next job was to bring it to school in the morning and take it home in the afternoon. That had to be repeated every day of the week.
How I got started
On the day that I got the form I came home and showed the form to my dad and mom. Then I told my family about one week of no screens, no junk food and only physical activities. I explained about the challenge that my teacher gave us. I read the rules. Also, I declared the period – May 7th to May 13th.
I prepared a big poster with the message, what you can do, what you can’t do etc. and taped it on the TV screen. Then I unplugged the TV.
Reactions from my family
Dad: “I am 90% with you, because I will need to use the computer every day.”
Mom: “I am 100% with you. I will make vegetables for dinner.”
Big brother: “Whatever.” (He was not sure…)
Baby brother: “Can I watch TVO kids, just TVO kids, for half an hour please, please, please.” (Finally, we agreed.)
