Limited Space Activities
Limited spaces and a lack of equipment do not need to be barriers to increasing physical activity levels among children at school. By using the ideas found in this Limited Space Activities booklet, teachers can motivate and encourage their students to “move and grove” in the classroom for good health, every day all year around. The Limited Space Activities booklet was adapted with written permission from Ontario Health and Physical Education (Ophea)Curriculum Support document.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit in partnership with Health Action Windsor-Essex, promotes the Limited Space Activities booklet with school communities.
The booklets were originally launched in the fall of 2005 with the Mamba Challenge initiative. It is an excellent resource that can assist teachers to increase the physical activity levels of their students in small places, and meet the mandatory 20 minutes of Daily Physical Activity (DPA) requirements. DPA promotes that elementary students have a minimum of 20 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous physical activity daily during instructional time. DPA can help increase children’s energy levels, attention span and improve decision-making skills, all necessary tools for learning. It can also provide favourite games that can be used to reinforce positive behaviour in students.
Teachers are in a unique position to influence routine levels of physical activity throughout their school community. Let’s work together to address the issue of high levels of physical inactivity so that future generations can learn active habits to last a lifetime
