Nutrition Month

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, in partnership with Health Action Windsor-Essex, provides grade 5 classes with a variety of nutrition resources to celebrate Nutrition Month.

3 out of 4 checklistNutrition Month 2008 – “3 out of 4…That’s the Score”The theme for Nutrition Month 2008 was “3 out of 4… that’s the score” which served to encourage students and their families to eat at least 3 out of 4 food groups at every meal. Active living and reducing screen time were also promoted. Resources provided to grade 5 classes included tracking sheets for students, a great newsletter for parents, and in-class activities which supplemented the curriculum.

By participating in this initiative, students in all Windsor-Essex County schools had an opportunity to increase their knowledge and awareness regarding healthy eating. As well, they had a chance to win great prizes.

Comments about the initiative included, “… students were very interested and excited to learn about proper nutrition and portions.  Some were very surprised,” and, “It is amazing to watch and listen to my children interact verbally with one another discussing their lunch choices and breakfast choices.  It makes them more aware of what they are eating.”

Winning schools were notified in early May, 08.

Be sure to look for next year’s Nutrition Month package which will be delivered to schools early February, 2009.
