Win or Lose - Encouragement is the Name of the Game
What comes automatically, is the well meaning, “pointing out” of mistakes which usually sounds like….“What you did wrong was…” or “What you should/could have done was…” Sound familiar?
Imagine how this response would feel for you! Following a presentation you’ve just given, your boss “points out” the one mistake you made (as if you didn’t know!) instead of the numerous excellent “plays” you carried off.
Does this motivate you to run back to your desk and keep on working? No, but if he/she would have started with an encouraging remark such as, “You really worked hard on that!” you’d probably feel motivated to continue to work hard.
That is why encouragement works! It motivates children to continue to work hard. Encouragement is a learned skill that sends a message to your children that they are loved and respected.
