Win or Lose - Encouragement is the Name of the Game

After a losing game, most parents find it difficult to think of something positive to say to their children. What they do say (usually automatically) may not give their children what they need most – ENCOURAGEMENT.

Win or Lose Girl SmilingWhat comes automatically, is the well meaning, “pointing out” of mistakes which usually sounds like….“What you did wrong was…” or “What you should/could have done was…” Sound familiar?

Imagine how this response would feel for you! Following a presentation you’ve just given, your boss “points out” the one mistake you made (as if you didn’t know!) instead of the numerous excellent “plays” you carried off.

Does this motivate you to run back to your desk and keep on working? No, but if he/she would have started with an encouraging remark such as, “You really worked hard on that!” you’d probably feel motivated to continue to work hard.

That is why encouragement works! It motivates children to continue to work hard. Encouragement is a learned skill that sends a message to your children that they are loved and respected.

Below are some examples of encouraging statements that you can use – win or lose!

  • “You really worked hard .…(in that second period)!”
  • “It seems like you’re pleased with your effort.”
  • “What was your best play of the game?”
  • “Your quick thinking …..(made it harder for them to score).”
  • “You really helped out …(the defense when you fell back).”
  • “That…(pass you made up the middle) was right on!”
  • “Wow! Your…(stick handling, back checking) has really come a long way.”
  • “You may not feel great about this game but look how far you’ve come.”
  • “Knowing you, I’m sure you tried your hardest.”

Encouragement has a language of its own that builds on the strengths and assets of each child and helps them believe in themselves.
