2007 Beach Water Quality Testing Program

The Health Unit has started the 2007 beach water quality testing program. We will be monitoring 9 public beaches throughout the Windsor-Essex County area.

Beaches will be sampled on a weekly basis during the summer for bacteriological levels. There are health risks associated with swimming in contaminated water include ear, eye and nose infections, as well as gastrointestinal infections. As the E. coli bacteria count exceeds 100, the health risk increases accordingly.

From our experience, we have found that weather conditions are the leading factor that can adversely affect water quality. Bacteria levels will increase in accordance with the amount of rainfall, or strength of the wind blowing onto the shore. We do not recommend swimming for at least 24-48 hours after a rainfall, or if the water is cloudy and churned up from a strong on-shore wind. Calm, clear water is usually associated with lower bacterial levels, while rough or cloudy water has been associated with high counts.

The bacterial counts given reflect the conditions at the time of sampling. Conditions change from day to day depending on the weather conditions and lake levels. The bacterial counts for samples taken Wednesday, June 13, 2007 are as follows:

Results indicate that all 9 beaches have acceptable levels of E. coli.  Our next sample date will be Wednesday, June 20, 2007 and results will be available Friday, June 22, 2007.  For more information, enter ext. 1100 and ask for the intake inspector between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  Thank you for visiting the 2007 Beach Water Quality Testing Program page.

The bacteria counts are as follows:

- E.coli/ 100ml - 100 or less ( < 100 ) indicates a low health risk (white)
- More than 100 ( > 100) indicates a health risk (green)
- Items in grey indicate values that are not available.

Please check our web site and Beach Hotline at 519-258-2146 ext. 426 (H20) throughout the weekend for updated information.

** The higher counts were found to be generalized throughout the area due to
the onshore wind conditions and thunderstorms prior to sampling.
