Mumps: Are You Protected?
IDC image Stop further outbreaks - get vaccinated.

Mumps is a contagious viral illness that can have serious complications in young adults. The number of mumps infections has increased in Canada over the past year. Four provinces have experienced mumps outbreaks, primarily among students attending colleges and universities. To prevent further outbreaks and protect the health of people in Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is implementing a Mumps Catch-Up Vaccination Program. The vaccine being offered is called MMR and provides protection against measles, mumps, and rubella.

Four out of five young adults born in Ontario between 1970 and 1991 are not fully protected against mumps because they received only one dose of a mumps containing vaccine as children. One dose may not be enough to fully protect against the infection. People in this age group may be at a higher risk of infection if they live, learn, and work in close proximity, such as attending colleges and universities. For these reasons, all college and university students should get re-immunized.
