Quit Smoking Guides

There are a number of FREE guides available to help those who want to quit smoking.

The following quit smoking guides are available by contacting the Tobacco Hotline at 258-2146, ext. 3214 or tobacco@wechealthunit.org

1.  On the road to quitting:  Guide to becoming a non-smoker – published by Health Canada

The On the Road to Quitting program was created to help individuals build motivation and self-confidence to quit smoking. This self-help online program will help people discover why they smoke, including how addicted they may be to nicotine. It will also suggest ways to prepare to quit and provide tools to deal with withdrawal, cravings and stress

2.  One step at a time - published by the Canadian Cancer Society

Quitting doesn’t happen in one step, it's more of a process that happens in stages.  The Canadian Cancer Society's "One step at a time" program provides a series of guides that can be matched to the stage that meets the needs of the person who wants to quit.  Three guides are available:

  • For smokers who DON’T WANT to quit; helps to understand more about the habit of smoking and how smoking affects others
  • For smokers who WANT to quit; provides motivation, tips to prepare for a quit attempt and tips for success in the days following a quit attempt
  • If you want to HELP a smoker quit


3.  Taking the first steps toward a smoke-free beginning:  a booklet for moms on smoking, second-hand smoke and quitting - publlished by the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit

Smoking and second-hand smoke can affect the outcome of a pregnancy.  The guide, developed by the Family Health Department, provides the facts and then outlines tips and a plan to go smoke-free.
