How and When to see a Dermatologist
A dermatologist is a qualified physician that has obtained additional training specializing in the care, management, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the skin. One reason people see a dermatologist is to follow up on a suspicious mole or sore on the skin.
Each month, our skin needs a check-up. Ask someone else to look at the hard to see areas of your body such as your back or the back of your neck. By looking at your skin once a month, you can become very familiar with your skin and moles. Once a year, during your annual physical check-up, ask your family doctor to assess your skin.
When you or your doctor notice a change in the size, shape, colour, surface texture, or height of a mole or sore, it is time to investigate further. If a mole or sore becomes itchy or painful, starts to bleed or ulcerate, seek medical advice immediately.
A family doctor will make an assessment of your skin condition. At that time, you and your doctor can discuss the possibility of a referral to a dermatologist. Your family doctor will notify the dermatologist’s office. Once the contact is made with the dermatologist, you will be notified of your appointment date and time. To find a dermatologist in your area, go to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website
