Screen-Free Tips for School-age Children
Children spend about 13.5 hours per week watching TV, not including computer time or video games (Statistics Canada, 2004). Too much screen time decreases children’s activity level. Daily physical activity is important for your child’s optimal growth and development. So, during the fall and winter limit screen-time and get moving with your children. Here are some suggestions:

In the Winter:
- Try snow shoeing
- Go cross-county skiing
- Go tobogganing or sliding
- Play windmills in the snow
- Make a snow fort or a snowman
- Go skating at your local arena
- Go bowling
- Try curling
Safety Tips:
- Wear protective safety gear when being active. For example, a fitted helmet should be worn when ice skating, or playing hockey.
- Wear sun protective gear, such as UV protective sunglasses, sunscreen- SPF 15+.
- Even in the winter you still need to drink water before, during and after activities to reduce the risk of dehydration.
- Select activities that are age appropriate for your child. This will reduce the risk of injuries, frustration, and boredom.
- Have Fun!
