These centres are places where parents and caregivers:

  • Take part with their children in a range of programs and activities
  • Get answers to questions
  • Get information about programs and services that are available for young children
  • Talk to an early years professional
  • Meet other parents and caregivers in the community

    2. Check out the Reading, Rhythm and Movement Kit
    It is available at city and county libraries as well as, the Ontario Early Years Centres. This kit offers fun and interactive activities and information to help families with healthy nutrition and physical activity promotion.

    Inside the kit you will find:
  • Booklets on healthy eating for infants and children 1-5 years of age
  • An activity planner to help track the family's TV time and physical activity
  • Children's books that encourage physical activity
  • A CD that encourages children to be active to music
  • A booklet called Kids in Action that can help families do simple activities to create a foundation for lifelong healthy behaviors.

    3. Play together inside or in the back yard.
    Details of simple games for infants, toddlers and preschoolers can be found on the following websites:

    www.fitness.gov. Search for the booklet Kids in Action. This booklet tells you how to enhance your child's development with games like:
  • Jump the River
  • Bridges and Tunnels
  • Simon Says

    www.city.toronto.on.ca/health. Search for the booklet Fun and Physical Activity, For Families and Caregivers with Children 0-4 years. This booklet gives you some free ideas for making exercise a fun part of your time together with activities like:
  • Peek-A-Boo Push Ups
  • Jump and Twist
  • Baby Lifts

    4. Visit your local community pool.
    For safety around the water:
  • Enroll in a water safety program or swimming lessons at your local community pool.
  • Follow the safety rules from the video Within Arms Reach. This video is at all Ontario Early Years Centres. Log on to www.safekidscanada.org and print the colouring pages that highlight water safety rules.
