Information on Safety and Dressing Tips for Winter Activities

Turn of the Screen Logo1. Wear protective safety gear when being active. For example, a fitted helmet should be worn while tobogganing, skating, or snowboarding.

2. Wear sun protective gear, such as a brimmed toque, protective sunglasses, and don't forget the SPF 15 sunscreen in the winter.

3. Be sure to drink water before, during and after activities. A warm drink after being in the cold will help to warm you up.

4. Select activities that are age appropriate for your child. This will reduce the risk of injuries, frustration, and boredom.

5. Dress in layers and remember mittens, hats that cover the ears, and scarves. Replace any wet clothes with dry ones.

Helmet Safety

  • Enforce helmet use. Most serious injuries are to the head.
  • Wear only Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved helmets.
  • Wear the proper helmet for the sport.
  • Buy the helmet to fit now, not to grow into later.

    Sledding/Tobogganing
  • Avoid areas with rocks, trees, or other hazards such as cars or water.
  • Choose a sled you can steer and stop.
  • Children under two should not be sledding and parents should sled with children under five years.
  • Never sled or toboggan head first.
  • Never use homemade sleds like plastic bags, cardboard, or garbage can lids.

    Skating
  • Never skate on lakes, ponds, or rivers that have not been tested and approved by local officials.
  • There is no requirement to wear a helmet, but it is recommended that young children learning to skate use a properly fitting hockey helmet.
  • Small children should only be allowed on the ice with close, adult supervision.
