Starting Early – Keeping Preschoolers at a Healthy Weight

 Family fun in the snow

Childhood obesity is on the rise in Canada.

26% of all children under the age of 17 years are overweight. (Stats Can, 2004)

Parents have a responsibility to keep young children active and limit screen time (TV, computer, video games).

Screen time for preschoolers should be limited to 1 hour or less per day.

Watching TV can contribute to unhealthy eating because:

    • Children may not recognize they are full if eating in front of the TV.
    • Food advertisements are directed to children.
    • Advertised foods are high in fat and calories.

Young children learn about healthy eating and physical activity from their parents.

Parents need to set a good example.

Healthy Eating

    • Follow Canada's Food Guide.
    • Eat at home more often. Restaurant meals generally don’t provide enough fruits and vegetables.
    • Keep portion sizes small.
    • Keep freshly cut vegetables and dip available for snacks.
    • Limit juice to ½ cup (120 ml) per day.  Drink water when thirsty.
    • Limit high-fat and high-sugar foods and junk foods.

 Physical Activity

    • Be active as a family. Watch what activities your child likes. If your child laughs and smiles, do the activity again. Also, try new family activities like flying a kite.
    • Involve preschoolers in chores such as vacuuming, dusting, raking leaves, and gardening.
    • Explore what your community has to offer.
        • Playgrounds, walking and biking paths, parks, beaches, pools, and arenas.

To help children stay at a healthy weight, children need thier parent's help to limit screen time, eat right, and be active.
