Identifying Roadblocks and Overcoming Barriers

According to the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (CFLRI), the top three barriers to regular physical activity are:

  • Lack of Time
  • Lack of Energy
  • Lack of Motivation

Do any of these sound familiar? If so, read on for ways to overcome them.

Lack of Time

  • Prioritize physical activity! Move it UP the list of things to do.
  • Schedule physical activity into your life like you would an appointment or meeting.
  • Identify "time wasters" that are taking time away from doing something that is important to you and your health.
  • Start with an activity that is manageable - can you find 10 minutes?

Lack of Energy

  • Identify your high energy and low energy periods in the day and try to schedule physical activity during your high energy period.

Lack of Motivation

  • Rely on your dog, or friends and family walking partners to help keep you committed.
  • Track your walking progress to see how well you are doing.
  • Track your short and long term goals and reward yourself when you meet a goal.
