Tips for dog and owner

labIf you and your dog are just getting started, you may need to start slowly and build up the time and/or the speed of your walks. Try to plan weekly goals until you settle into a routine.

Dogs on the Move
• Talk with your veterinarian about the amount of walking that is suited to your dog’s age, breed, general health, size, etc.
• Walk your dog with a lead and when walking at night use a collar flasher for your dog’s safety.
• Provide your dog with cool water before and after your walk. If walking for long periods, provide water during the walk.

Pick Up Duty
• Be certain to pick up after your dog.
• Always keep a bag in your pocket, just in case you need it.

Owners Moving Too
• Talk with your doctor about beginning a walking program, if you have a history of health problems or have not been active for some time.
• Start with a good pair of comfortable walking shoes or a running shoe.
• If walking at night wear reflective clothing.
• Drink plenty of cool water before, during and after your walk.
