Eat Smart! Recreation Centre Program

Windsor-Essex County is part of a provincial pilot program working to bring healthy, tasty, good quality foods to recreation centres.

The Eat Smart! Recreation Program is currently in a pilot phase from January 2008 to June 2008, with a planned provincial roll-out in Fall 2008. Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is one of six health units across Ontario, working with the Nutrition Resource Centre and various stakeholders from food service and vending companies to pilot test this program.

To qualify for the Eat Smart! award of merit, recreation centres with a snack bar need to offer at least two healthier choices from each of the four food groups in Canada's Food Guide and accommodate customer requests for healthier choices where possible. Vending machines can be labelled as Eat Smart! vending machines in recreation centres if at least 25% of the products are Eat Smart! choices.
