Falls Prevention
Did You Know?
- Falls are the leading cause of serious injury among older adults (i.e., those over 65 years of age) (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2010).
- Falls cause most hip fractures in older adults, and 20% will die within a year of their fracture (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2005).
- Forty percent (40%) of nursing home admissions among older adults are fall-related (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2005).
Falls are a major problem at any age. Fall-related injuries occur among infants, toddlers, preschoolers, children, youth, adults, and older adults. However, older adults are at an increased risk of serious injury from falls.
The risk of injury is always there, but you can prevent injuries by knowing the risks involved, and taking steps to reduce those risks.
