What is a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner?

A Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) is a Registered Nurse (RN) with advanced practice skills and education, who has graduated from an approved primary health care nurse practitioner program in Ontario. |
To work as a PHCNP, a Registered Nurse must successfully complete the extended class registration examination to earn the title: Registered Nurse Extended Class - RN(EC).
The PHCNP can:
- Assess, diagnose and treat common health conditions (e.g. ear infections, urinary tract infections) and minor injuries (e.g. sprains, lacerations).
- Provide counseling to help individuals with lifestyle decisions, such as smoking cessation and weight loss.
- Promote wellness care, such as immunization and well-baby checks.
- Care for women during and after pregnancy.
- Provide growth and development screening for infants and young children.
- Work with family doctors, specialists and community agencies.
- Refer to other health care providers, community programs and services.
Purpose of the Prenatal/Postnatal Nurse Practitioner Clinic:
- Provide early and regular prenatal and postnatal care and care for infants up to 2 years.
- Promote optimal child health through health promotion and early identification and treatment of health concerns.
