Booster Seat Law
"Using child car seats or booster seats can reduce the risk of injury or death by 75%" (Ministry of Transportation of Ontario). Under a new provincial law, on September 1, 2005 booster seats are mandatory for young children.
| According to the law, booster seats are required for children under the age of eight, weighing more than 18 kg but less than 36 kg (40-80lbs) and who stand less than 145 cm (4'9"). |
A child can start using a seatbelt alone once any one of the following criteria are met:
- child turns eight years of age
- child weighs 36 kg (80 lbs)
- child is 145 cm (4'9") tall
It is also mandatory for caregivers, such as grandparents and babysitters, to transport children in booster seats. Failure to comply with this new law could result in a $110.00 fine and a loss of 2 demerit points.
