Risk Factors for Postpartum Mood Disorders

Some women may have some of these risk factors and do not have a PPMD. Other women have none of these risk factors and still have a PPMD. The actual cause for a PPMD is unknown. Each case of PPMD is different for every woman who has it.
  • Depression during pregnancy
  • Previous postpartum mood disorderDepressed Mom - white standing with crying baby
  • Previous mental health issue
  • Family history of postpartum mood disorders or mental health issues
  • No help or support
  • Stress
  • Tendency to worry
  • Previous miscarriage(s) or infertility
  • Low income/financial stress
  • Unexpected or difficult birth experience 
  • High expectations of birth and motherhood
  • Severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Low self-esteem
