The program is voluntary and FREE for all families in Windsor and Essex County. A team of Public Health Nurses and Family Home Visitors assists families with parenting and the promotion of healthy child development.
For All Families
After you have your baby, a Public Health Nurse will call you within 48 hours of hospital discharge (excluding weekends and holidays). The Public Health Nurse will answer any questions or concerns you may have about your health and your new baby’s health. She will give you breastfeeding support and information on infant feeding. During this telephone call, she will offer you a home visit. This home visit includes health teaching and weighing your baby.
For Families facing Challenges
If you are a new parent and or have young children and find parenting a challenge, if you are new to the community and alone without much support, a teen or single parent, the HBHC Program may be able to help you by providing additional support through home visits. A team of Public Health Nurses and Family Home Visitors work together to provide information on childcare, to encourage infant and child development, and to assist with safety and community resources. A Public Health Nurse will talk with you to see if you can benefit from the program.
Some ways the HBHC Program may help:
During your pregnancy,
- We can help you in preparing for the arrival of your baby through education, videos and practical demonstrations of newborn care. As well we can connect you with community services that may be helpful to you.
After your baby is born,
- The HBHC team can provide extra breastfeeding support, information on safety, growth and learning. We can check your child’s development to make sure he or she is developing in a healthy way and we can connect you with services in the community that can help you and your child.
As your child grows,
- You may have ongoing concerns about your child’s health and development and questions about parenting. We may be able to help you with these concerns.
