Benefits of Breastfeeding

You should start breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth.
Seek help in the hospital right away and be aware of community resources available to help if questions or problems arise.
Below are answers to common questions that a new breastfeeding mom may have.
What are the signs that my baby is breastfeeding well?
- Baby should have at least 6-8 wet diapers per day after 6 days old.
- Baby should have at least 2-3 soft yellow stools per day after 6 days old, which may decrease after one month.
- Baby should be gaining weight.
- Baby should be active and alert when awake.
- A baby who is latched onto breast well can draw and suck the milk he/she needs.
- Breastfeeding should not be painful.
What are signs of a correct latch?
- Your baby’s mouth is open wide
- 1-1 ½ inch of breast is inside baby’s mouth
- Lips of baby are flanged outward
- Baby’s chin is pressed against breast
- You can hear and see baby “suck-suck-swallow”
- Baby does not make clicking sounds
What are some breastfeeding positions?
- Cross Cradle Position

- Side-Lying Position
