The health unit has taken many steps to identify and reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) infection to the community over the past number of years, including conducting bird, mosquito, and human surveillance.
 | WNV is a mosquito transmitted virus that can be transferred to humans from the bite of an infected mosquito. A mosquito becomes infected when it bites a bird with WNV. |
FAST FACTS- The first ever positive bird found in Ontario, an American Crow, came from the Windsor area.
- In 2009 there were three positive cases of WNV in humans, in Ontario (Some of these were travel-related cases with trips outside of Ontario).
- In 2009, Windsor-Essex County's mosquito trapping program tested 1 149 pools for WNV.
