Give Your Teeth A Sporting Chance!

You always send your child onto the ice to play hockey with a helmet and appropriate protective pads, so why not a mouthguard? The most common dental injuries happen in sports- more than 200,000 injuries to the mouth and jaw each year!

Referee WhistlingTo protect your child’s mouth from injury during sporting activities, dentists unanimously support the use of mouthguards. Sports related dental injuries are not only painful, but can be costly. It takes very little force to cause serious damage.

A mouthguard is a plastic appliance worn in the mouth to cover the teeth. It should be a part of every athlete’s gear, especially hockey players! It helps to prevent serious injury such as jaw fractures, and broken or knocked out teeth.

Mouthguards are also effective in preventing laceration or bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances.

A properly fitted mouthguard must:

  • Be protective and comfortable
  • Be odorless, tasteless
  • Not interfere with speaking/breathing
  • Remain in place during the activity

    The three most common mouthguards available are:
  • Stock mouthguards - “over the counter – one size fits all”, inexpensive, offers the least amount of protection;
  • Boil-and-bite mouthguards - immersed in boiling water and formed in the mouth by using tongue and biting pressure, often do not cover all of the teeth;
  • Custom made mouthguards - customized by a dentist for maximum protection, fit and comfort.
  • Mouthguard tips:

  • wear it during all games
  • rinse it off after each use
  • if braces are worn, the mouthguard should be modified by a dentist to allow for tooth movement

    Play it smart, wear a mouthguard!
