Public Health Nurse - 60% Job Share - 1 year

Up to 1 Year Maternity Leave - Reporting to a Manager in Family Health and the Director of Health Promotion, the Public Health Nurse will use the nursing process to promote the health of families.

Interventions will be directed at parents, caregivers, social service providers, childcare providers, health care providers, workplaces, and people in their reproductive years that are making choices about future family life.  Activities will follow the implementation requirements and standards as outlined in the Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines (1997).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Promote and support breastfeeding
  • Promote and provide education to pregnant women, their partners, and people planning pregnancies
  • Promote and provide workshops and series of classes for parents and caregivers of children, birth to 6 years
  • Promote and provide telephone information and counselling services for parenting, breastfeeding, and reproductive health
  • Provide consultations, resource information, in-service education, etc. to child-care providers, health care providers, and social service providers on topics in reproductive health and child health (including breastfeeding and parenting)
  • Promote reproductive health and breastfeeding support in workplaces
  • Work with the mass media to distribute information on reproductive health, parenting, and breastfeeding
  • Work with coalitions/networks of community agencies and groups, health, and social service providers
  • Develop and distribute community inventories, conduct and document needs assessments, and provide community-wide education campaigns
  • Perform other related activities as required including back-up for the Intake Nurse
  • Responsibilities require work throughout Windsor and Essex County

Qualifications:

  • A sound knowledge of developmental issues and needs of infants and young children and their families
  • Ability to develop, organize and facilitate group activities
  • A sound knowledge of population-based health promotion strategies
  • Experience in project management and program evaluation
  • Demonstrated leadership in working with coalitions and community partners
  • Excellent interpersonal, writing, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience in the use of computer software such as WORD, PowerPoint, Publisher, Health Connection, etc
  • Experience using e-mail and conducting internet searches
  • Experience creating well-referenced resource materials
  • The ability to communicate fluently in French would be an asset
  • Availability for evening and weekend work
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable motor vehicle during hours of work
  • If required, a criminal clearance certificate must be provided at the applicant's cost
