On November 27 our PPMD community committee will meet with prenatal educators from Windsor and Essex County to share the prenatal education resource, which was developed in response to surveys and focus groups with parents and health care staff about what information expectant parents need to receive to help them make the transition to parenthood.

Report from a University of Windsor Student on CSH Placement
I am a fourth year nursing student currently finishing my final placement in the field of Community Health Nursing. During this placement I have had the opportunity to work closely and collaboratively with members of the Comprehensive School Health Team and various community partners. Under the supervision of my preceptor, Thelma Maxwell, I assist with and present Epi-pen in-services to principals, teachers, and their support staff throughout Windsor-Essex County. I also work with a nutritionist and Health Action coordinator. We are currently involved in a pilot project to disseminate heart health information to the Lebanese Christian Community. It is my responsibility to assist her in the development of this exciting new outreach project through the planning of a focus group with this target population. It has been a great pleasure to collaborate with everyone and I look forward to future opportunities. Submitted by Suzanne MacKew, a fourth year university student.

Youth Action Alliance Tobacco Project- Sui Liang, Peer Leader
The Youth Action Alliance is a new program promoting non-smoking to youth. The Health Unit has hired ten peer leaders between the ages of 14-18 from Windsor-Essex County. So far, there have been three meetings in which the different smoking programs in Ontario and other smoking related information were discussed. They are currently training to be peer leaders for non-smoking. In the future, they will generate ideas for events and promotions to encourage smoke- free living. We are hosting a reception on November 20, 2006 in our Boardroom at 4:30 p.m. and all Board members are welcome.
Youth and Steroids Project
The goal will be to increase awareness of anabolic steroids. Although use is not significant, there was enough concern expressed during the Needs Assessment phase to move forward with the project. Draft educational materials (posters and wallet card) have been developed and are being evaluated in focus groups by male secondary school youth in competitive team sports. A spring implementation is planned.
